National Night Out

August 7, 2018 from 5:30 PM to dusk

Four Tree Island

National Night Out is an annual campaign designed to promote police and community relations in our neighborhoods to make them safer. It is a great way to meet new neighbors, touch base with old friends, and foster a sense of community by bringing police and fire personnel together with citizens under positive circumstances. Millions of people take part in this national event in all 50 states each year. Flyers will be distributed to South End homes in July with more information.

House Histories Group Meeting

Monday  June 18, 2018  from 6 - 8 PM

32 Pickering Street

In anticipation of Portsmouth’s 400th anniversary celebration, many FOSE members have begun to research their historic homes and a House Histories Group has been formed to aid in this endeavor. The goal is to meet informally to discuss means and methods of research, to exchange information with fellow investigators, and to plan further seminars at both the Portsmouth Athenaeum and the public library.

The group is gathering this information for a two-fold purpose. First, to put together a brochure for a walking tour of South End homes and second, for a house plaque program being developed in conjunction with the Portsmouth Advocates. More detailed information about the plaques will be forthcoming in the near future, but a mock-up of the proposed design can be seen below.

2018 Annual Meeting

Sunday January 28 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM

Tyco Visitors Center at Strawbery Banke

The Friends of the South End's Annual Meeting takes place every year in January and its aim is to inform members of the events of the prior year, as well as to provide updates regarding FOSE's financial health and Board personnel changes. Each year we invite guest speakers to address the membership. We have asked Portsmouth Chief of Police Robert Merner to speak to community issues and Rockingham County Register of Deeds Cathy Stacey for a tutorial on how to access the state's online deed look-up system, as an extension of our "Countdown to 400" celebration. In addition, Strawbery Banke is generously offering free ice skate time to FOSE members both before and after the meeting.

The agenda will be as follows:

1:00 - 1:20: members arrive and assemble, enjoy light refreshments

1:20 - 1:30: greeting and remarks by Larry Yerdon, President and CEO, Strawbery Banke Museum

1:30 - 2:30: introduction of guest speakers Robert Merner, Portsmouth Chief of Police followed by Cathy Stacey, Rockingham                             County Register of Deeds, and their remarks

                   Alan Gordon (Membership)

                   Ruth Maron (Newsletter)
Judy Nerbonne (2017 Fairy House Tour, Lister Leaf Busters)
                   Sue Shea (Special Events)

2:45 - 2:50: Sue Shea will give a brief overview of a collaborative effort between FOSE and the Portsmouth Advocates to reintroduce a house plaque program whereby homeowners can purchase an exterior house plaque to display the name of the original owner and year in which their house was built.

2:50 - 3:00: closing remarks, more refreshments, followed by ***FREE SKATE***

***SB has graciously offered FREE ice time for FOSE members on this day from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 3:00 to 4:15 PM.  The skate rental fee remains $5.***
